Pet Preparedness

Pets are important members of every family and should always be included in your family’s emergency plan. Whether it is a severe weather event, a call for evacuation, or any other emergency situation that requires you to leave your home, make sure you are prepared to have the proper supplies for both your family and your pets.

There are several things you can do in advance to prepare to evacuate with your pets.

#1: Have an Evacuation Plan: Many public shelters and hotels do not allow pets. Take some time to research which safe places can take pets before disasters and emergencies happen. Your plan should also include extra food, medications, supplies, and ways to safely transport your pet.

#2: Develop a Buddy System: Plan with neighbors, friends or relatives to make sure that someone is available to care for and evacuate your pets if you are unable to do so. This includes educating one another about dietary restrictions, pet medications, and other information to ensure the pet's well-being.

#3: Have your Pet Microchipped: Make sure to keep your address and phone number up-to-date and include contact information for an emergency contact outside of your immediate area.

#4: Research Local Animal Control and Animal Shelters: Local animal shelters can provide additional information if you’re uncertain about how to care for your pets in case of an emergency.

Having a plan for you and your pets will save time, reduce stress, and help you evacuate quickly with the proper supplies. Pay close attention to local alerts and warnings sent by state and local public safety officials so you can better protect yourself and your pets.
